Located in the atrium, the M. Rosetta Hunter Art Gallery serves as a beacon of expression and engagement for Seattle Central’s community. Funded by the Student National Association (SNA), the gallery provides exposure to high-quality art exhibitions featuring regional artists, as well as a space for students to explore and exhibit their own creativity.
The gallery actively engages our student body through various avenues, notably providing platforms for student artwork such as the annual Student Invitational, inaugural art pop-ups – the first scheduled for May 8, aptly titled ‘You’ and curated exclusively by Central students – with ambitions for further expansion in this realm. Additionally, it fosters student-curated exhibitions, exemplified by Shan Thomas’s compelling showcase ‘YouthBuild’ last year, encapsulating the diverse creative voices within our community.
One of the most exciting aspects of the gallery’s engagement with our student body is the Student Invitational exhibition, a juried show with prizes awarded to the top three entries. From drawing, photography, and painting to sculpture, textile, and digital artwork, the gallery accepts all types of media for the show.
As a way to counteract the intimidation that might take over beginners, the gallery offers framing services for those who need their pieces framed but may not have access to tools and materials. Usually, 2-D artworks such as drawings, paintings, and photography, are placed behind a mat board cut to size, and then placed into a frame to be hung. The gallery provides a dimension guide here.
Many students question if their artwork is “good enough” to be submitted to the show. The answer is always yes! – even if you are not a Fine Arts student, which is a common worry amongst our community.
Submissions for this year’s Invitational runs from April 1 through May 1, and all Central students qualify. Accepted works will be displayed from May 20 to June 5, with a celebratory party on May 23 after the Unity Fair.
On May 8, the gallery will also be hosting its first student-curated art pop-up. Organized by Xdrian, a Central student, & Art Music Grp, the event will include physical and digital art, NFTs, musical & dramatic performances, refreshments, and a clothing market.
Furthermore, the gallery is currently hosting the show “Pink, Unpacked,” by Seattle Print Arts, which runs through the first of May. This month, the M. Rosetta Hunter Gallery is featuring a Zine workshop on Tuesday, April 16, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and a Collage workshop on Thursday, April 25, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Admission is always free, and all are welcome.
