Editor in Chief Job Position

The Seattle Collegian is the independent student news publication of
Seattle Central College. Our obligation is to the truth and to our
readers — the students, staff, and faculty of Seattle Central as well as
 the citizens of Capitol Hill and the city of Seattle.

As Editor-in-Chief, you will lead the editorial vision and strategy of our
publication, ensuring content that aligns with The Seattle Collegian’s
mission and engages our audience, with a focus on the Seattle Central
College community. This role involves overseeing the editorial team,
managing workflows, maintaining editorial standards, and keeping our
content relevant, and impactful. You’ll serve as the key decision-maker
for all editorial operations, collaborating with writers, editors, and
contributors to deliver compelling stories while meeting deadlines and
maintaining a positive, encouraging work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Assists the advisor in hiring staff members
  2. Assists the advisor in adhering to the yearly budget
  3. Assists the advisor in training new staff members
  4. Attends all weekly staff meetings
  5. Leads said meetings
  6. Attends weekly meetings with the advisor and managing editor
  7. Serves as a member of the Communications Board
  8. Serves as a non-voting member of the Publications Board
  9. Writes, reviews, and/or edits the content of Letters from the Editorial Board
  10. Makes executive decisions with the Editorial Board as outlined in Section IV
  11. Adheres to deadlines decided by the Editorial Board
  12. Posts new articles to the website
  13. Holds weekly office hours in the Seattle Collegian office

Requirements

  • Experience in WordPress, Slack, and Google Suite (preferred)
  • Must be an enrolled student at Seattle Central College
  • Minimum one year of experience in journalism or related field
  • Solid knowledge of AP Style guidelines & attention to grammar
  • Familiarity with SPJ’s Ethics of Journalism
  • Strong writing and editing skills, as well as strategic thinking to shape The Seattle Collegian’s editorial vision
  • Leadership or management experience (preferred)
