School To Produce Prize-Winning Play

The first play of the Seattle Community College theatrical season will be the 1965 Pulitzer Prize winner, “The Subject Was Roses,” by Frank Gilroy. It is tentatively scheduled to be presented at the Washington Branch, on Nov. 18, 19. 24, 25 and Dec. 2 and 3.

Elizabeth (Terry) Keland, Mike Mellott and Steve Prendergast will portray the three characters in the play. They were chosen from the 37 persons who tried out. The director, James Kriley, was overwhelmed by the response and he is confident
that this will be a successful year for the drama department.

The basic ingredient Kriley has to work with, so far, is student participation. Many more students are needed for scenery, costumes, props, and advertising.

Kriley said if students would like a lot of hard work in exchange for “a cup of coffee or a pat on the back”,
they should come join S.C.C.’s first theatrical plunge.

He added that those who didn’t get acting parts in this production should not be discouraged. Two other plays will be given this year.

Although the first presentation will be a contemporary play with a small cast, the next two probably will be chosen from the classics and have large casts.

Kriley said that this organization is a “red-hot movement,” that has plans to bum. A bare stage, with
a few stools for the “actors,” will be the setting for the informal interpretive “play readings” planned for the future.

Kriley hopes that the obvious interest in drama here at S.C.C. will lead to the forming of a club. A Drama
the class will be offered next quarter.
